A Long Line Of Hundreds Of Klondike Gold Miners And Prospectors Seen Here From A Distance Lined Up To Enter Canada Through The Nwmp Customs Post At The Summit Of The Chilcoot Pass (A Favourite Canada - Us Border Crossing Point) In The Yukon In 1897. Customs Duty Was Just One Of The Duties Of The Nwmp. This Little Force Of Nwmp Tried To Maintain Law And Order Amidst The Criminal Elements Who Were Murderers, Smugglers Of Whiskey, Thieves, And Gamblers. The Nwmp Also Found Lost Travellers And Even Delivered The Mail To Scattered Gold Camps. They Covered About 64,000 Miles In A Single Year For Mail Duty |

George Arthur French Became Second North West Mounted Police Commissioner November 18, 1873 At Age Of 32, And Held The Position Until 1876. He Was Born In Roscommon, Ireland. He Was Educated At The British Military Colleges At Sandhurst And Woolwich. His Specialty Was Artillery And He Was Posted To Canada In 1862 And Became Inspector Of Artillery And Warlike Stores. In 1871, He Was Seconded To The Canadian Militia When British Troops Withdrew From Canada And Became Commandant Of The School Of Gunnery At Kingston, On. As Nwmp Commissioner He Ordered Nine-Pounder Guns To Be Taken On The March West. After Three Years Service In The Force He Resigned To Rejoin The Royal Artillery. He Subsequently Rose To Become Commandant Of The Colonial Forces In New South Wales, Australia, With The Rank Of Major General. He Died Shortly After His 80th Birthday |
